Crystallography
Research at the Laboratory for Crystallography aims to understand the relationship between crystal structure and physical properties and to establish the structural foundations for the understanding of phase transitions.
The main focus of research is on aperiodic crystals, including phase transitions between incommensurate, periodic, and partially ordered structures. Another key area of research is the highly precise investigation of electron density distribution using the maximum entropy method (MEM) for both periodic and aperiodic crystals.
The experimental methods used in the laboratory include single crystal X ray diffraction and X ray powder diffractometry. Both techniques can be combined with setups for low and high temperatures and can also be performed under high pressure.
